Haven Hospice held Camp Safe Haven at the Cuscowilla Nature and Retreat Center in Micanopy on April 27. Camp Safe Haven supports children and their caregivers who have experienced loss through fun and therapeutic activities led by Haven team members and volunteers.
Campers and their caregivers participated in art therapy, a drumming circle, a musical puppet show, yoga, a nature scavenger hunt and a lakeside memorial flower release ceremony. Each activity offers unique opportunities for children to express their emotions and learn coping strategies.
“Camp Safe Haven provides a safe place for children to express their grief and remember their loved ones,” said Haven social worker Lynn Kiefer. “Children are able to process their grief while having fun and building new relationships.”
All attendees share the common experience of losing a loved one, creating an environment of understanding that many young campers do not often experience elsewhere.
